Pharmaceutical overview of shortages and recalls

Shortage reports concern the availability of a specific medicinal product or pack. Recall and batch notices concern pharmaceutical quality and physical stock. Product name, active ingredient, strength, dosage form, pack, German PZN and—where applicable—the affected batch must be checked separately against master data, inventory and the original notice.

Pharmaceutical review criteria

  • Confirm product identity by name, active ingredient, strength, dosage form, pack size and German PZN.
  • Check scope and reporting period; an expected end date is not confirmed resupply.
  • For recalls, reconcile the affected batch with stock, reservations and previously supplied packs.
  • Substitution, dispensing and patient supply remain a case-specific pharmaceutical assessment under applicable rules.

Using a shortage report

Does a shortage report mean my pharmacy cannot obtain the product?

No. It is information about the named product and period. Actual supply to your pharmacy also depends on the exact German product identifier, supplier responses and available stock. Check those separately.

Source and reporting date

A selected reporting snapshot, not real-time supplier availability. BfArM and PEI publish information reported by pharmaceutical companies. An expected end date is not a confirmed delivery commitment. Check the current BfArM record and the supplier's response.

Medicine recalls, batch recalls and batch checks are based on publicly available AMK notices. Check the original AMK notice for affected batches and required actions.

This selection reflects the documented retrieval and is not a complete list of shortages. Reports may change. The BfArM database generally has no additional delivery-status information; enquiries should go to the pharmaceutical company concerned.

  • BfArM: published shortage reports
  • PEI: Vaccines
  • AMK: Recalls and batch notices
